There is a wonderful experience awaiting you at nearby Reston, about an hours drive east of I-66. A visit there includes a library, an information center with many free materials, a wonderful sales area and a working seismograph, a weather station, dinosaur footprints and a rock garden walk. Follow the map and go during the week. Its Federal and closed during the weekend. Do the walk and take pictures for what can be an impressive report. See directions and map below.

Take I-66 East to the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100). Take the Parkway North toward Herndon and Reston. At Sunrise Valley Drive, go right (East) to USGS Drive. Turn right, go past the main entrance to the Visitor Parking and turn left.
